Project: Cultural and Educational complex, MA diploma
Odessa State Academy of Civil Engineering and Architecture
Year: 2011
This MA project was completed within one year and consists of research and graphic work. The aim of the research work was to determine architecture and planning structure of a new type of public spaces for Ukraine - Cultural and Educational Complex.
In the past decade, cultural and educational activities are increasingly developing in Ukraine. Odessa is undergoing urban transformation which includes the restoration and refurbishment of existing buildings, construction of new public squares and reconceptualization of public urban areas.
Cultural and Educational Complex is located in Odessa, Ukraine, on M.Zhvanetski boulevard which is a continuation of the Primorsy Boulevard, on the steep slope overlooking beautiful Odessa Seaport panorama.
The Complex is conceived as an extension of The Odessa Fine Arts Museum and together they are to create an inviting public space flexible enough to accommodate cultural events and to be an excellent public square area for recreation. It will serve as a continuation of the pedestrian route, which now finishes at the end of the Prymorski boulevard for many people.
Both, Odessa Fine Arts Museum and new Cultural and Educational Complex, are to combine historical and contemporary art of the country. This complex aims to enrich everyday lives of its surrounding community and attract millions of visitors from around the world.
The main concept of the Cultural and Educational Complex was to create a shape that will be both in physical and visual harmony with the surroundings.
The building is designed as a compact object, with an adaption to the landscape, punctuated to its center by a courtyard that spans top three levels of the complex. The courtyard is arranged as an amphitheater, which can be used as an open-air theatre or sculpture garden. In the design of landscape were I used existing sculptures, such as Zaha Hadid sculptures.
Main entrance to the complex is the entrance from M.Zhvanetski boulevard.  There is also an entrance from the lower level of the boulevard. Lower level of M.Zhvanetski boulevard as well as the upper level, starts at the Odessa municipality.
The complex consists of eight functional zones combined into a single volume.  Five of them are public: public area zone, exhibition, education/seminar, concert hall, food hall zones, whereas the others secure an access to the staff: research/academic, administration, storage and garages zones.
The circular shape of the Culture and Educational center enables a flexible division of the exhibition zone into different shapes and sizes, creating a unique framework for the art.
